The best upgrades are boring in a good way. They take work off your list and cents off the bill.
Start with a variable-speed pump, a well-fitted cover and LED lights. Add a robotic cleaner, a mineral or salt system that is set up correctly, and a timer or simple automation so you are not switching things by hand. If you heat, a heat pump with a cover beats an uncovered gas heater left on. Extra paving, a fence that meets the standard first time, and shade where you actually sit will get used more than a waterfall you clean twice a week.
