The pump is the big electricity user. A variable-speed pump on a sensible schedule costs far less than an old single-speed unit running all day. A well-sized filter, a tight cover and a salt or mineral system that is actually balanced will do more for your bill than swapping brands of chlorine.
Heating is optional and it is the line item that moves the most. No heater and a cover is the cheapest way to swim in summer. A heat pump extends the season.
