Modern does not mean cold. It means the pool, the paving and the house look like they belong together. Stick to a short material list. One paving tone, one metal for the fence and lights, timber or a timber look where you sit, and plants that are green twelve months of the year.
Keep ornaments off the wet edge. Put the personality in a lounge setting, a single sculpture well back from the water, or a fire bowl on the dry terrace. White umbrellas, navy towels and simple outdoor chairs photograph well and they also live well.
